Appearing last night at Mississippi State University, Mitt Romney sounded like he’s running for president again. Romney, who said earlier this month that he’s considering a campaign, told students–quote–“I’m thinking about how I can help the country.” The 2012 Republican nominee avoided criticizing other possible GOP candidates, but took some shots at President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Northeast Mississippi gets its fifth Walmart Neighborhood Market on Wednesday. The new store is opening at 7:30 in the morning in Derma in Calhoun County. The Derma Neighborhood Market will cover 12-thousand square feet and employ about 30 people.
Gas prices fell another seven cents last week and the national average for regular is now at $2.06, moving closer to two dollars a gallon. If it happens, this would be the first time the national average was under two bucks in nearly six years. According to AAA, the statewide average for regular in Mississippi is under two dollars at $1.90 a gallon, down six cents from a week ago. In Grenada, the average is all the way down to $1.77, down eight cents. The dramatic slide in retail gas prices has been driven by a similar plummet in global crude oil prices, which are at the lowest levels in almost six years.
A Greenwood native who went on to become an All-American quarterback at Ole Miss has died. The university says Jimmy Lear passed away Monday at a hospital in Oxford after a brief illness. Lear quarterbacked the Rebels from1950 to 1952. He is both the Ole Miss Athletics and Mississippi Sports Halls of Fame. Jimmy Lear was 82.
A Calhoun County man, now serving life in prison, has gone to the Mississippi Supreme Court to appeal his conviction. 31-year-old Andy Nicholas Brown was found guilty of stabbing to death 68-year-old Earlie Balford inside his Pittsboro home in 2012. Brown claims his attorney failed to properly investigate the case and present it as possible self-defense or manslaughter.
The National Weather Service is keeping a hard freeze warning in effect until 6 o’clock this evening for an area including Grenada, Sunflower, Leflore, Carroll, Montgomery and Webster counties. And a wind chill advisory is in effect until 9 this morning for the same area. You are reminded to protect pets, plants and pipes.
