A non-profit conservative think tank ranks Mississippi 10th in the nation when it comes to the state’s economic outlook. In its annual “Rich States, Poor States” report, the American Legislative Exchange Council gives Mississippi the top 10 ranking based upon factors including low wages and low taxes. Utah was number-one, Georgia and Florida, at eight and nine, were the only other two southeastern states in the top 10.

Miss Mississippi is in Las Vegas this morning, preparing for the Miss USAevents. Paromita Mitra will represent the state when vying for the title of Miss USA on June 16th. Mitra is a student at Mississippi State University studying aerospace engineering.
A cousin of Jimmie Rodgers, the Father of Country Music, will be honored today with a marker on the Mississippi Country Music Trail. The marker unveiling for Jesse Rodgers is scheduled for 1 p.m. along Mississippi Highway 63 and Buckatunna-Chicora-Clara Road in Waynesboro. Rodgers passed away in 1973
Folks in Oxford who don’t want to pay for gas have an alternative. It was in May of last year that construction began on 11 miles of new bike lanes on several of the main roads in Oxford. Officials say those bike lanes are just about finished.
The final numbers on the long Memorial Day weekend are in from the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Troopers worked a total of 129 accidents, three of which included fatalities. They also wrote seven-thousand-380 citations, including 177 DUIs.
Gas prices continued to remain relatively stable as millions of Americans hit the road for the Memorial Day weekend. As of today, Triple-A reports the national average price of regular gas is three-62 a gallon, three cents less than last week. The statewide average in Mississippi is three-26, down two cents from a week ago. A check of gas-buddy-dot-com finds the price of regular in Grenada ranges from three-37 to three-42 a gallon.
Mississippi State is one of 16 hosts for this week’s NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional round. This marks the 12th time that the Bulldogs will host a Tournament Regional with games starting on Friday. Also playing at Starkville will be Central Arkansas, Mercer and South Alabama.
When enrollment for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act opens in October, Mississippi’s insurance commissioner says he’s afraid some people won’t be able to get health insurance. Mike Chaney says they could be confused over plans, coverages and rates.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol says a Batesville man is one of three people who had died as of Monday afternoon on state roads during the long Memorial Day weekend. 51-year-old Thomas B. Pugh died Sunday night when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle on Mississippi 322 near Yarbrough Road in Quitman County. The three fatalities compares to no deaths last year and nine for the same holiday period in 2011.
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is urging safe boating this holiday weekend. Wear a lifejacket. Do not drink while out on the water and watch the capacity of your boat- do not overload. Check weather conditions before you head out and make sure you have emergency supplies on board.
