C-17 at Airport

Last week, you might have seen a C-17 Globemaster at the Grenada Municipal Airport, and wonder what’s it doing here? Well, the military was loading soldiers and equipment to deploy to Africa. The soldiers will take part in the United Sates AFrica Command, a command of U.S. military operations responsible for 53 African Countries. The C-17 was only in Grenada for 3 hours.

Funeral Case

The Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office has determined that a Grenada funeral home has settled their issue with pre-paid holders. According to the Secretary of State’s office, the estate of Carl Latham has fully funded pre purchased sales of funeral goods and services of National funeral Home located in Grenada.

Three sentenced

Three Grenada men have entered a guilty pleas and sentenced for the Robbery of Regions Bank in 2014. Letrell Moss, Rafer Moss and Justin Clark will serve 60 month in federal prison, according to Grenada County District Attorney Doug Evans. The three were charged with the false reporting of a bomb threat after they made calls to two Grenada schools, prior to a robbery at the Regions Bank on Sunset Drive.

Also, keep in mind, those who join the Arbor Day Foundation in February will receive 10 free Eastern rebud trees to plant when it gets warmer. The free trees are part of the nonprofit foundation’s Trees for America Campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between March 1 and may 31st, with instructions. State Troopers are investigating an incident that happened Friday night. The crash happened on the Grenada County line, when a Ford Focus and a Ford Ranger collided and the pickup overturned, ejecting the passenger. The driver of the pickup left the scene of the accident before troopers arrived. The incident is under investigation.

Martez Taylor, 23, A Charleston man is lucky to be alive, but is facing serious charges for leading the Grenada Police Department on a high speed chase. He struck a guard rail, left the roadway and overturned in a ditch. Taylor was injured but did manage to get out of the vehicle. Charges are pending against Taylor for DUI and other driving related related offenses.

Keith and Debbie Nails’ Glenbrook Yard was chosen as the Grenada Garden Club’s Yard of the Month for January. They have a beautiful lawn with Birch Trees and Natchez Crape Myrtles, with flowing beds that are well defined with mulch and edging. They spend hours keeping the yard in tip top shape

State and local law enforcement are trying to figure out who apparently shot and killed a man whose body was found by police Saturday morning in Grenada. Police Major George Douglas says someone called the police department after 7:30 a.m. to report a body in a field off Meadowbrook Road. The body was identified as 28-year-old Chris Carter of Grenada.

The Snow flurries and slick highways didn’t keep folks away, people were still eager to come out on Friday for Life Help’s Cultural Diversity Day. The event was held at the Leflore County Civic Center.

City Manager Charles “JoJo” Weathers, says the raises will come, but because of the slow process of receiving city tax revenue returns, it’s made the process a difficult
One. Weathers said, “Hopefully, by the first of next month, we will get the raises”. The city approved a five
Percent raise for the 230 employees in August.
Employees are still waiting on their city pay increases.

Head Start Officials in Washington DC hope to have all area Head Start Students return to classrooms next month. After a tough year’s end…Central Mississippi, Inc…was dismissed from running the Head Start Programs in its six-county district. Last month, 12 Head Start Centers were forced to close. They really want all centers to reopen by February. The Grenada Head Start
Center, which is affiliated through the Holly Springs Based ICS was not affected.

Tuesday, the Greenville City Council voted to remove a symbol of the past from city grounds many residents thought created a divide.
After hearing from the Rev. Roosevelt Johnson Tuesday, council members voted 4-2 to remove the state flag from all city properties and buildings.

Bundle up today….snow and high only of 34 this afternoon….tonight.

The Grenada Garden Club is inviting all citizens to come hear Jeff McManus, director of Landscape Services and golf Services, come and speak, for the award winning landscape of the University Of Mississippi. The event will be on February 18th
At 6pm at Corey form, Holmes CC, Grenada. It is free and open to the public.

Former Grenada High School Standout Tyrin Jones is making heads turn at Northwest Community College in Senatobia. Jones is averaging 13.1 points and shooting 48 percent from the field this season.

The Queen of Bluegrass returns for a performance sponsored by the Grenada Arts partnership, Grenada and Holmes Partner for the Arts. Yes, the Lovely Rhonda Vincent will perform with her band The Rage tonight at 7PM at the HCC Corey Forum.
Vincent last played here to a packed house in 2012. Vincent is the recipient of seven consecutive Female Vocalists of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Association and over 40 awards total!! She says Expect lots of surprises tonight!

Christmas will be here before you know it! Well, at least for some Grenada residents. Christmas in April is in it’s 22nd year, and volunteers continue to work to assure warmth and stability in the homes. Workers with Christmas in April are set to paint, hammer and clean their way into another season of good deeds, according To board members. In order to be eligible you have to own your home and complete an application process.

It was a great weekend for the Kirk Academy Basketball teams! Both Varsity Teams won over North Delta and Greenville St Joseph.
Rhonda Vincent will be visiting Grenada this Thursday night, 7pm at the HCC Corey Forum! She is the Queen of Bluegrass and is returning for a performance sponsored by the Grenada Arts Partnership, Grenada and Holmes partner for the arts.
