Two men are charged with capital murder in a high-speed crash that killed a Grenada police officer. On Friday morning, Captain John Wayne Haddock was putting out spike strips on Highway 8 near Interstate 55 to pop the tires of a car traveling in excess of 100 miles an hour when he was struck by that car and died at the scene. Grenada County Sheriff Alton Strider said Monday it’s believed the driver of the car was 20-year-old Kyle David Wendt of Colorado and his passenger was 40-year-old Thomas Leland Lee of Louisiana. They were wanted in a church burglary. The suspects suffered minor injuries and were booked into the Grenada County Jail on Saturday on charges of murder, burglary and felony fleeing.
John Wayne Haddock was 50 years old and a 21-year veteran of the Grenada Police Department. His funeral will be held at three o’clock this afternoon at Emmanuel Baptist Church. 51 Highway will be shut down from the church to Woodlawn Cemetery during the funeral.
