Grenada is mourning the loss of a police officer who was struck and killed Friday morning as he tried to stop a car involved in a high-speed chase. The vehicle was carrying two suspects in a Grenada County burglary and traveling at more than 100 miles an hour as it headed toward the Highway 8-Interstate 55 overpass. Mayor Billy Collins said Captain John Wayne Haddock was hit while trying to put out a spike strip to pop the car’s tires and died at the scene. Haddock was 50 years old and a 20-year-veteran of the Grenada Police Department. The two suspects in the car were hospitalized with one reported in critical condition.
